What is a neuroma?
A neuroma refers to the swelling of a nerve due to compression or direct trauma. If left untreated, this swelling can result in permanent nerve damage.
One of the most common areas for the development of a neuroma is the forefoot. Specifically known as Morton's neuroma, this type of neuroma is typically caused by abnormal movements in the metatarsal bones, which are the long bones behind the toes. The nerve between the second and third toes becomes compressed and inflamed.
What are the symptoms of a neuroma?
Indications that you might be dealing with a neuroma include:
A tingling sensation or a burning pain in one or more of the toes
Numbness in the toes
Pain that limits your mobility and affects your overall quality of life
A popping sensation when walking
Patients may experience some relief by massaging the forefoot, but certain movements can trigger additional neuroma pain.
How is a neuroma diagnosed?
In order to determine if a neuroma is the underlying cause of your foot pain, Dr. Molen will carefully review your medical history and conduct a thorough examination of the affected foot. In some cases, he may request imaging tests, such as X-rays or an MRI, to rule out other conditions that exhibit similar symptoms to a neuroma, such as stress fractures in the foot or toe bones. Once a neuroma is confirmed, Dr. Molen will develop a tailored treatment plan focused on relieving your neuroma pain and enhancing your mobility.
How are neuromas treated?
There are several treatment options for neuromas. Dr. Molen may suggest nonsurgical interventions such as laser therapy or corticosteroid injections, which can deliver anti-inflammatory medications directly to the affected nerve. Additionally, he may recommend the use of custom orthotics (shoe inserts) to alleviate pressure on the forefoot.
In cases where severe pain persists and conservative treatments prove ineffective, Dr. Molen may recommend neuroma surgery. This surgical procedure involves the removal of the affected nerve using specialized surgical tools and techniques, thus relieving the compression on the nerve.
If chronic neuroma pain is limiting your mobility and you require podiatric care, please do not hesitate to contact our office or conveniently schedule an appointment online today.
