WARTS Q & A

What are warts?

Warts are noncancerous growths on the skin that occur as a result of exposure to the human papillomavirus (HPV). While they can affect adults, warts are particularly common in children and can be contagious.

Typically, warts aren't painful, but they may become bothersome if they develop in certain areas of the body, especially on the feet, knees, or areas prone to friction.

What are the symptoms of warts?

The symptoms of warts vary depending on the type of wart you have. Foot warts, also known as plantar warts, appear on the soles of the feet and may have black spots in the center, which are clotted vessels that supply blood to the wart. This type of wart can either be a single growth or appear in clusters.

Other signs to be aware of include:

  • Pain and tenderness when walking or standing

  • Small, hard growths on the bottom of your foot

  • A growth that is painful or bleeding

  • Growths that hinder your daily activities

Even if you're not concerned about a foot wart, it's advisable to visit Pryme Foot & Ankle Center to have Dr. Molen examine it and ensure it's not something more serious. He can perform a biopsy sample if necessary.

Who is at risk of having warts?

Warts can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds, but certain factors may increase the likelihood of developing them:

  • Walking barefoot in public areas, such as saunas or locker rooms

  • Sharing shoes with others

  • Having a weakened immune system

  • Being a child or teenager

If you have an abnormal growth on your toe or the sole of your foot, it's important to refrain from scratching or picking at it, as it may lead to the development of warts in other parts of your body.

What type of wart treatment might I receive?

Dr. Molen can diagnose plantar warts through a comprehensive foot examination, which includes reviewing your medical history and lifestyle. Based on his findings, he will develop an effective wart treatment plan at the practice.

Not all warts require treatment, as some may disappear on their own without medical intervention. However, if you have bothersome or painful foot warts, Dr. Molen offers several in-office wart treatments.

An application of salicylic acid can help soften the wart, making it easier to remove during a minor procedure. In cases of recurrent warts that are difficult to treat, cryotherapy may be recommended. This treatment employs freezing technology to permanently destroy the wart.

If you need an evaluation for unusual skin growths or have a painful wart requiring treatment, please call our office or schedule an appointment online today.
